Earl Schurmer is the managing partner of Schurmer & Wood and has over twenty years of litigation experience. Mr. Schurmer is admitted to practice law in all of the State and Federal Courts in California.
Mr. Schurmer is a member of several professional organizations, including the Consumer Attorneys of California, Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles, American Trial Lawyers Association and the Ventura and Santa Barbara County
Bar Associations. He is also a past participant and member of the Santa Barbara and Ventura Inns of Court. He has and continues to act as Judge Pro Tem at the Ventura and Santa Barbara Superior Courts as a settlement officer and has acted as an arbitrator in numerous cases throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.
Mr. Schurmer started his plaintiff's-side personal injury career in 1993 when he was hired as an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Schurmer & Wood. His extensive experience in handling the defense side of cases proved to be a valuable asset in handling all types of plaintiff cases. Since that time, Mr. Schurmer has handled virtually all types of personal injury and wrongful death actions from the initial client meeting to jury verdict with a vast number of seven figure settlements, arbitration awards and jury verdicts.
Mr. Schurmer also has extensive experience in medical malpractice cases and has taken a particular interest in the medical aspect of all different matters. He has participated in numerous medical educational opportunities including a course taught by UCLA medical school instructors with extensive classroom training followed by hands on cadaver examinations and dissections.
Prior to Schurmer & Wood, Mr. Schurmer began his professional career as an associate attorney for Gilbert, Kelly, Crowley and Jennett. Gilbert Kelly is an insurance defense firm in Los Angeles that specializes in defending many types of personal injury and wrongful death actions. While at Gilbert Kelly he took and defended hundreds of depositions including plaintiffs, defendants, law enforcement personnel and all manner of medical, scientific and technical experts. Mr. Schurmer handled and defended cases from receipt of the initial claims file through arbitration and trial and had substantial dealings with insurance company managers and adjusters relating to value determinations and resolution of claims.
Mr. Schurmer attended the University of Southern California from 1982-1986 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Mr. Schurmer received his Juris Doctorate in 1991 from Southwestern School of Law in Los Angeles.
Mr. Schurmer is a founder and current board member of Hands4Others, a non-profit organization with a goal to provide clean and sustainable drinking water to those in need throughout the world. Mr. Schurmer is also an honorary board member of the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers' Charities as a result of his participation and charitable contributions.
Mr. Schurmer currently resides in Santa Barbara with his wife Rhonda and his three children.
